Fern Speech and Language Services is pleased to offer virtual speech-language therapy for children, teens and adults across Ontario. Virtual appointments provide a convenient way to access individualized support without the need to travel to a clinic.
Whether your child is developing speech, language or literacy skills, your teen is looking for support with communication, learning or study skills, or you're seeking support with your own communication skills, Fern offers a personalized approach tailored to each individual's needs and goals.
Our goal is to help each client build skills, confidence and independence in ways that support everyday life.
Virtual speech-language therapy allows you to connect with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) through online appointments. Sessions take place using interactive activities, guided practice, discussion and practical strategies tailored to each client's goals.
Therapy is designed to be engaging, meaningful, and relevant to everyday experiences. Depending on the client's age and needs, sessions may involve screen-based activities, conversation, reading and writing tasks, or practising skills using materials available at home.
For children, parents and caregivers can play an important role in supporting progress between sessions. When appropriate, they may participate in appointments, learn strategies, and receive guidance on incorporating practice into daily routines.
Virtual therapy can be a convenient alternative to in-person appointments, while still providing individualized care and opportunities to work toward meaningful goals.
Fern offers virtual services focused on the development of speech, language, literacy and executive functioning skills, as well as study skills and homework support.
Articulation and speech sound development
Support for producing speech sounds more clearly and improving overall speech intelligibility. Therapy goals are tailored to the individual's needs and communication priorities.
Language development
Support with understanding language and expressing thoughts, ideas, and needs. Depending on the individual's goals, this may include vocabulary, sentence formulation, grammar, following directions, comprehension, and organizing spoken language.
Literacy
Support with developing reading and writing skills. Goals may include strengthening foundational literacy skills, reading fluency and comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and written expression. Therapy for older students may address higher-level skills such as summarizing, inferencing, and organizing written work.
Executive functioning
Support with skills that help us plan, organize, manage time, stay on task and work toward goals. Therapy may focus on developing practical strategies to support independence at school, at work, and in everyday life.
Study skills and homework support
Assessment, coaching, and intervention to help develop effective study habits and homework routines. Support may include planning and prioritizing tasks, managing time, organizing materials, developing study plans, creating study notes, and preparing for tests and assignments.
Services are individualized based on each client's age, strengths, areas of need and personal goals.
Convenient and accessible
Access therapy from home without the added time and logistics of travelling to a clinic. This can make it easier to fit appointments into busy family, school, and work schedules.
A familiar environment
Participating from home may help children, teens, and adults feel comfortable and ready to engage in activities.
Skills that carry over into everyday life
Virtual sessions create opportunities to practise communication skills using familiar materials and routines. Strategies can be applied in the environments where those skills are needed most.
Parent and caregiver involvement
For children, virtual appointments can make it easier for parents and caregivers to participate when appropriate. They can learn practical strategies and receive guidance on supporting their child's goals between sessions.
Continuity of care
Virtual appointments can reduce travel-related barriers and make it easier to maintain access to support when getting to a clinic is challenging.
Virtual speech-language therapy can be a great option for many children, teens, and adults, but it is not the best fit for everyone. The most appropriate service delivery method depends on the individual's needs, goals and ability to participate effectively online.
Virtual therapy may be a good fit when the client can engage with activities on a computer or tablet, has access to reliable internet, and can participate in a reasonably quiet space. The amount of support needed will vary depending on the client's age, attention, communication skills, and goals. For younger children, parent or caregiver involvement is important to help maintain engagement and support practice between appointments. Older children, teens, and adults may be able to participate more independently, depending on their individual needs.
Some clients may benefit more from in-person services, particularly when assessment or intervention requires hands-on support, physical prompting, or activities that cannot be effectively completed virtually.
If you're unsure whether virtual therapy would be appropriate for your child or for yourself, we're happy to discuss your concerns and help you explore the available options.
1. Initial conversation
We begin by learning about your concerns, priorities, and goals. This is an opportunity to ask questions, share relevant background information, and discuss whether virtual services may be a suitable option.
2. Assessment
An assessment helps us better understand the client's current skills, strengths, and areas of need. Depending on the individual's needs and the areas being assessed, appointments may take place virtually, in person, or through a combination of both. If additional sessions are needed to complete the assessment, we will discuss the most appropriate approach with you. Assessment methods are selected to ensure they are suitable for the individual and the concerns being explored, and any limitations of virtual assessment will be discussed as needed.
3. Personalized therapy plan
Based on the information gathered, we work with the client and, when appropriate, their family to identify meaningful goals and develop an individualized plan.
4. Ongoing sessions and progress review
Therapy sessions focus on targeted activities, guided practice, and practical strategies related to the client's goals. Progress is reviewed over time, and goals and strategies are adjusted as needed. For children, parents and caregivers will receive suggestions for supporting skill development at home.
Collaboration with parents and caregivers, teachers, school team members, and other professionals involved in the client's care may be incorporated into the therapy process. This collaboration can help support consistency across home, school, and other environments, and ensure strategies are meaningful and practical for everyday life.
The frequency and duration of therapy will depend on the individual's needs, goals and treatment plan.
Fern Speech and Language Services is committed to providing virtual care in keeping with applicable standards and guidance established by the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO).
Virtual services are approached with the same commitment to professional, individualized care as in-person services. This includes considering whether virtual delivery is appropriate for the client, discussing the benefits and limitations of this format, obtaining informed consent, and protecting personal health information.
Privacy, confidentiality, and clear communication are important parts of the therapeutic relationship. Families and clients will have the opportunity to ask questions and understand what to expect from virtual services before proceeding. If virtual therapy is not appropriate or no longer meets a client's needs, alternative options may be discussed.
You can learn more about virtual care and client rights through CASLPO's professional standards and resources.
